Rare Things in Sports

Sports continue to fascinates us and even leave us in awe as if we are in state of trance. Superb performance and tricks dished out by remarkable athletes will simply throw us right off from our seats, and keep us guessing how the things before our very eyes transpired.
Here are some things that are considered rare in sports.

  1. Golf – Hole in one, or an eagle.
  2. Basketball – Four point play, buzzer beating basket that serve as the winning basket in the end, quadruple double, a dunk with very high level of difficulty of doing it, 100+ point, 20+ assists or rebounds, 10+ blocks, or 7+ steals performance in one game.
  3. Baseball – Multiple home runs (three or more) and hits (9) in a game, and a grand slam or two in a single inning.
  4. Gymnastics – Rare triple and perfect score of 10.
  5. Diving – In the last staging of the Olympics in Beijing, China, the highest degree of difficulty that is utilized is 3.8, which is a reverse 2 and a half somersaults with 2 and a half twists in pike on both the three and ten meter platform.
  6. Boxing – Word champion in at least three weight divisions or a knock out win under one minute in the first round.
  7. Athletics – Running under 10 seconds in the 100 meter dash.
  8. Figure skating – Rare double.
  9. Billiards – Shooting the nine ball in just first try.
  10. Bowling – Perfect score of 300 in 10 frames.

9 Filipino Sports Heroes and the 1954 Philippine Basketball Team Enshrined to Hall Of Fame

Late boxing greats such as Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Francisco “Pancho” Guilledo, Ceferino Garcia, and the father and son tandem of Jose “Cely” Villanueva, Anthony Villanueva, track and fields stalwarts Miguel White and Simeon Torribio, swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso, and the basketball quintet led by Carlos “Caloy” Loyzaga, that took home the bronze medal that glitters like gold in the 1954 World Basketball Championships made up the illustrious first batch of PSC Hall of Famers.

Elorde reigned as WBC super featherweight Champion for seven years from 1960 to 1967, while Guilledo was the world flyweight champion from 1923 to 1925. Garcia on the other hand was the world middleweight champion from October 1929 to May 1940.

Yldefonso, the first Filipino medalist in the Summer Olympics salvaged a bronze medal in the 200 m breaststroke in the 1928 Amsterdam Games. He duplicated his feat when he took another bronze medal in the same event at the Los Angeles Games, four years later.

The Los Angeles Olympic Games also produced another great Filipino athlete in Torribio who collared the bronze medal in the men’s long jump and boxer, Jose “Cely” Villanueva, who annexed the bronze medal in the bantamweight division.

In 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, athletics stalwart White brought home the bronze in the men’s 400-m hurdles.

Villanueva’s son Anthony made a breakthrough as he took the country’s first ever silver medal in the games, as he wound up second in the men’s featherweight in boxing in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Taking the cudgel for the RP team, Loyzaga steered the vaunted Philippine basketball squad to a respectable bronze medal triumph in the 1954 World Basketball Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Philippines’ lofty finish here is still the highest placing for any Asian country in the World Championships.

Lightning Usain Bolt Strikes



The year 2009 was indeed a banner year for sports thanks to lightning fast Jamaican Sprinter Usain  Bolt’s  record-breaking feat in the centerpiece event of athletics which is the 100 meter dash at this year’s World Championships in Berlin Germany.  This year Bolt clocked under 9.6 seconds for the 100m dash and shattered the world record he set in the Beijing Olympics.

Usain great strides in athletics truly imbued the emergence of sports in captivating and giving people some measure of pride across the planet . Sports is at its glorious moments as handful of marquee athletes continues to stamp their class on their respective fields of discipline.
