Lightning Usain Bolt Strikes

The year 2009 was indeed a banner year for sports thanks to lightning fast Jamaican Sprinter Usain  Bolt’s  record-breaking feat in the centerpiece event of athletics which is the 100 meter dash at this year’s World Championships in Berlin Germany.  This year Bolt clocked under 9.6 seconds for the 100m dash and shattered the world record he set in the Beijing Olympics.

Usain great strides in athletics truly imbued the emergence of sports in captivating and giving people some measure of pride across the planet . Sports is at its glorious moments as handful of marquee athletes continues to stamp their class on their respective fields of discipline. Manny Pacquiao provided the glamour and display of brute force and uncanny wits by pulling the rug from under Britain’s slugger Ricky Hatton and heftier and bigger Margarito Cotto with crisp and unassailable knockout wins.

Bolt who  was catapulted to global fame, by annexing the 100m dash event in last year’s Olympics at Beijing Brid’s Nest Stadium in a world-smashing fashion, became the only man to run below the 9.7 seconds barrier. Lightning may indeed strikes twice and this is evident with Bolt’s conquest of his pet event the 100 meter dash in Berlin, Germany in the World Championships.
Bolt was also a potent force to reckon with in the 200m dash as well, in Beijing Olympics last year he chalked up a very rare sprint double. He dashed Michael Johnson’s long standing 1996 world record mark  (which was estimated by sports stastician to last 25 years) and secured his third gold in the Beijing Olympics by spearheading the Jamaican 4X1oo meter relay team to victory.

Bolt’s ascend to stardom helped propel sports to greater heights again, overshadowing the controversy posted by Ben Johnson and Marion Jones, who were beleaguered with the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Jones who was featured in Time, Newsweek, and Vogue went to jail because of the drug use.

Drug scandals also rocked Tour de France and tarnished the reputation of athletics and weightlifting. With several athletes scoring impressive victories, sports is again resurrected to once more inspire and fascinates the millions of spectators.
