Roger Federer Shows Fiery Form at the Start of Australian Open
The Australian Open is finally on full swing as favorites advance to the next round with mixed results. Swiss number one Roger Federer stave off a sluggish start but regain its fine form on time to show the door to Russian Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in his opening match at the Australian Open.
Federer who is setting his sight on his 16th Grand Slam title, lost the opening set, but recovered in the suceeding three sets to subdue the Russian bet in 2 hours and 44 minutes on Rod Laver Court. The win set him up a second round meeting with either Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina or Romania’s Victor Hanescu. Federer who is eyeing his fourth Australian titles, has never drop a match in the opening round of the year’s opening Grand Slam in 11 tries.
With 15 titles on his pocket, Federer is aching to nail his fourth Australian open titles. He is the current all-time Grand Slam leader in men’s tennis overcoming the 14 won by American Pete Sampras. Not to be outdone is Serena Williams who is seeking her Grand Slam singles to tie Billie Jean king as one of the all-time greats, crushed Uszula Radwanska 6-2, 6-1. Her sixth-seeded Venus has still to face Czech Lucie Safarora.
