Smart Gilas Five Enter Quarter Finals in Dubai Caging
The Philippine Smart Gilas continues to bowl over fancied teams in the 21st Dubai Invitational Basketball at the Al Ahli Indoor Stadium in Dubai. The team which is composed of young players and beefed up by an import that will be inevitably naturalized into a Filipino citizen overcame the highly physical UAE side.
Egged on by Filipino crowd the nationals played big time at the crucial stretch to chalk up their third straight win to enter the quarterfinal phase and erasing further the stigma of getting drubbed by the Syrian Al Jalaa team on its opening game.
Playing without some key players like Rabeh Al Huseini, Aldrech Ramos and Dylan Ababou, the Filipino basketball quintet bucked all odds to secure the win. The Filipinos overcame rugged and physical game of the home team as well as the biased calls of the referees.
JV Casio, Marc Baracael and seasoned former NBA player Ralph Sampson stepped up to the challenge. Casio chipped in 16 points including crucial four three pointers, Sampson contributed 15 points, 7 rebounds and a pair of block shots and Baracael added 15 points for the victorious Filipino side who is now in second place in Group B, behind their early tormentor Al Jalaa and ahead of Zain Jordan
