Washington Nationals Obtain Gio Gonzales

In an attempt to bolster its lineup the Washington Nationals gets what it wished for as they acquire All-Star lefty pitcher Gio Gonzales in a 6-player trade with the Oakland Athletics.

The 26 year-old Gonzales copped his first All-Star selection this year after winding up among the American leaders in wins, strikeouts (197), ERA (3.12) with a 16-12 record in 32 starts.

Washington Nationals Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo said, “Gio is a frontline starter with glooming credentials. The vast majority of which were achieved before his 26th birthday… Gio’s presence reinforces the top position of our rotation with yet another power arm to compete in the rugged National League East.”

Gonzales amassed a career record of 38-32 in 95 games and an impressive 3.93 ERA.

The Nationals also obtained minor league right-handed pitcher Robert Gilliam, while Athletics get right handed pitchers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, left-handed pitcher Tom Milone and catcher Derek Norris.
